Getting to know the Trains

A recap of our travels thus far...

Day 1 (April 5th): PARIS, France
The overnight coach from London got us to Paris just in time for the sun rise. We got ourselves orientated and then set off to explore the city. First stop was Notre Dame Cathedral. It was still early in the morning when we got there, but the area was packed with tourists. We found a cafe and had some delicous paninis for lunch/brunch, then spent a couple hours wandering along the Seine river. It was a beautiful day and we walked all the way to the Eiffle Tower. Another tourist packed area, as expected, and we had to wait an hour in line before we could climb to the top - but the view when we did was amazing. In the afternoon we continued walking to The Arc du Triomphe and then Montmartre. We didn't get to the Louvre, but we'll be back...

Day 2 (April 6th): ZURICH, Switzerland
Because we have most of April to explore Europe, and we're not too fussed about where to go first, we chose an option with a good train time and Zurich was it. Another early arrival, but because it was Good Friday, it wasn't as tourist packed. In fact, almost every shop and store was closed for the day, but it didn't really matter to us. The city was absolutely beautiful! What a reminder of BC! Mountains, a gourgeous lake, friendly atmosphere - but expensive. We payed about $4.00 each for a regualr cup of coffee and at the grocery store, one head of iceberg lettuce was $3.50!!! Anyway, after exploring a couple churches, we spent a relaxing afternoon on the lakefront. Definitely a city to put on the favorites list.

Day 3 (April 7th): BUDAPEST, Hungary
This time a late morning arrival. We ate some swiss baked goods on the train for breakfast, and then sampled some authentic Hungarian foods for lunch and dinner. We found a couple markets while exploring, which was cool, and a really amazing castle.

The people in Hungary were really friendly and we had a great time.

Day 4 (April 8th):

ROMANIA and BULGARIA
We spent Easter Sunday on a train through Eastern Europe. We had our own private cabin, which was nice because the train ride was about 36 hours. We saw some lovely landscape and the cultural differences were evident even from the train window. It was a nice rest from walking, but by the end of the ride we were more than ready to do some more exploring.

Day 5 (April 9th):

THESSALONIKI, Greece

We got here early and had a quiet morning waiting for the city to wake up. This took longer than expected - nothing opened as it's Easter Monday. But we walked around and saw some cool churches and some street venders on the waterfront. The city is a weird mixture of unpreserved ancient ruins, churches and mosques from every century, and modern apartment buildings. It's interesting, but we are quite looking forward to Athens tomorrow.

Wow - it sounds like you're having a great time - and I am here, doing not much. I hope you liked Paris more than you thought you would - any annoying Brits with dodgy accents???

Nothing new happening here really, I'm in Edinburgh for the day on the 17th - am flying to and fro for the day - I've been called to that interview for the job I was telling you about.

Have lots and lots of fun and try lots of foreign food - then I'll know what to avoid should I go travellng! xxx

Wish I was there with you, but probably wouldn't be able to keep up. Hope you are getting lots of post cards for me to scan. (would be fun to plaster them all over a big trunk). I can't wait to hear all about the the places you have seen. So glad to have heard from you - I was reaching my worrying point a little bit. you know me. I have so many questions about all the places, so I hope you remember every little detail.
I am wondering where your travels will take you next. what a wonderful adventure. When do you head back to England? Anyway, travel safe and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy. I love you both very much.

hey honey - I got a letter from the agents looking after your apartment. they need a bunch of copies of things, etc. before they can send the deposit back. they needed to hear from you in writing within 10 days of this letter. I will be calling them tomorrow a.m. to tell them you are unavailable until the beginning of may. Anyway, I hope you are heading back to Ronnies a few days before you come back to Canada as they need copies of council taxes, heat bills, etc. before they send you the money. also they had some questions for you. what a pain in the butt. anyway, I hope my phone call to them tomorrow (which is day 10) will help make sure you get the deposit back.
Hope this news doesn't set you back any.
Hope to hear from you soon,
Love and hugs, mom
